The name Karis is derived from the ancient Greek word "charis" that refers to unmerited Favor, Grace and Kindness.
As the name suggests, we are rooted in kindness and founded by Tanzanians with a deep love for their country. We are dedicated to providing unforgettable journeys that immerse you in the rich tapestry of Tanzanian culture, wildlife and landscapes. Whether you are seeking a thrilling safari adventure, a cultural immersion in vibrant local communities or a blissful retreat on palm-fringed shores, we've got you covered!
In classical Greek, charis describes a kindness the receiver has not earned and cannot repay - a gift offered because the giver chose to give it. It is the root of the English word charity, and of the character 'Karis' at the heart of our name.
We chose it deliberately. Tanzania has been generous with us: our families were raised here, our guides were trained here, our craft was learned here. Karis Expeditions is our way of passing that generosity on - to the guests who trust us with their once-in-a-lifetime journeys, and to the communities and conservation partners who make those journeys possible.
Practically, charis shapes how we work. It is the reason we cap our seasonal bookings, why our guides linger at a sighting long after other vehicles have moved on, and why 2% of every itinerary funds the Serengeti De-Snaring Programme. It is not a marketing line. It is the standard.
